Anchor Liquid Milk

Anchor liquid milk contains the goodness of pure, Sri Lankan milk

Anchor Liquid MilkAnchor has been providing dairy nutrition to Sri Lankans for over 35 years, and today is the No. 1 choice for mothers looking to provide the best nutrition for their families. We believe in continuous innovation, so that we can deliver top quality, accessible dairy products to cater to the changing needs of Sri Lankans. Today, we continue to bring the gold standard through Anchor liquid milk, which contains the goodness of pure, Sri Lankan milk made to international quality standards.

It all starts with our Sri Lankan dairy farmers.

From 200 farms in 1996, today our network has grown to thousands of farmer families.

Each day, we collect over 30,000 litres of milk from our farmers through a network of milk chilling and collection centres across the country.

From there, the milk is transported to our state-of-the-art Fonterra manufacturing plant, where it is processed using the same internationally certified quality standards that we use in New Zealand.

The Anchor liquid milk is then packed into convenient 1 litre Tetra packs and delivered to stores around the country – providing high quality dairy nutrition in a convenient format, available everywhere.

The introduction of Anchor liquid milk to Sri Lanka means we need to collect more high quality milk from more farmers, and to do this we need a stronger local dairy industry.

We believe that a strong dairy industry begins with our farming families, and we work with them to increase milk quality and production, helping to grow their incomes.

We’re scaling up our dairy development programmes, and growing our team of Supply Relations Officers. We’re investing in milk chilling centres and demonstration farms in our dairy communities that also act as knowledge sharing hubs.

Through these initiatives, we share dairy management techniques and processes to improve Sri Lankan dairy farming and help grow the industry.

It’s all part of our vision to fuel the health of Sri Lanka through dairy, together.

Fonterra Quality Standards include:

  • ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System
  • ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System

What’s the story behind Anchor liquid milk?

  • At Fonterra, we believe in continuous innovation and improvement so we can deliver top quality dairy products to cater to the changing needs of Sri Lankans.
  • Sri Lankans have traditionally relied on powdered milk for dairy nutrition – but in order to give consumers the option of other dairy formats we’ve launched this new product under our Anchor brand.
  • Anchor liquid milk is made from our own fresh, pure Sri Lankan milk, and provides consumers with another fresh milk option in a different format.

What is the difference in UHT / pasteurized / sterilization?

  • All Fonterra dairy – no matter what format – is high quality and safe.
  • UHT treatment is the best currently-available technology and is used all over the world to achieve a long shelf life milk without impacting the nutritional quality of the milk
  • UHT processing allows milk to be stored without refrigeration prior to being opened.
  • Anchor liquid milk has a shelf life of four months when unopened.
  • However, once opened Anchor liquid milk must be refrigerated and should be consumed within one to two days.
  • Producing UHT milk means we can reach more retailers across the island, making high quality dairy nutrition more accessible to Sri Lankans.

Can we see how Anchor fresh milk is made?

  • We frequently organise visits to our factory, farms and chilling centres.
  • These tours give you the opportunity to see the journey of our milk from grass to glass, together with our high food safety and quality processing methods.

What is the difference between Anchor milk powder and Anchor liquid milk?

  • The main difference is the milk’s format and source.
  • Anchor liquid milk provides the goodness of local Sri Lankan milk in a liquid format, available in a handy one litre Tetra pack.
  • Anchor full cream milk powder is made in New Zealand.
  • Anchor milk powder is just fresh milk with the water removed – the nutritional value remains.

  • From 200 farms in 1996, Fonterra’s farmer network has grown to thousands of farmer families.
  • We closely engage farmers and our Milk Collecting Centres to make sure we get best quality local milk for our products.
  • Our milk collection process is audited by International Milk Quality team of Fonterra to ensure that quality of milk collected is up to international standards.

What is “standardized milk”?

  • Anchor liquid milk is sourced from thousands of Sri Lankan dairy farmers distributed in different regions in the country.
  • The nutritional levels of milk, specifically fat and milk solid levels, can vary from region to region in the country, farm to farm, animal to animal and the correct milking time of the day. It is the nature of the dairy industry.
  • If not standardised, the final product will always be inconsistent.
  • The process of standardization controls these nutrient levels, and is required for most dairy products to maintain their consistency.
  • The Sri Lankan Food Act and Sri Lanka Standard Institute has established standards for different milk products which Fonterra follows when manufacturing its products.
  • We ensure our products meet the aforementioned standards through the standardization process, in order to ensure that our consumers get the same, high quality product every time.

Is standardised milk low fat milk or non fat milk?

  • Anchor liquid milk is full cream milk which has similar levels of fat that naturally occurs in fresh milk, and is not low fat or non fat milk.
  • This level of fat is in line with the Sri Lankan Food Act and Sri Lanka Standard Institute standards for fresh milk, which Fonterra follows when manufacturing its products.
  • We ensure our products meet the aforementioned standards through the standardization process, in order to ensure that our consumers get the same, high quality product every time.
  • Our product is standardized to ensure there is no variation in nutrient levels, which helps to maintain consistent quality.
  • However, other Fonterra Brands Lanka products that are labelled low fat and non-fat have reduced levels of fat.

How do you ensure the same high quality of Anchor in the new Anchor liquid milk?

  • Anchor liquid milk is a premium product, made from local Sri Lankan milk to international standards.
  • Our heritage and dairy expertise spans 200 years, enabling us to improve the milk quality of the farmers we work with in Sri Lanka
  • Our internationally certified food safety and quality practices ensure the gold standard that you associate with Anchor.
  • We have both the ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System and ISO 22000:2005 Food Safety Management System, and our dairy processing in Sri Lanka mirrors the systems that we have in New Zealand.
  • Fonterra also has the world recognised BRC (British Retail Consortium) certification.
  • We frequently undergo audits by all these certification bodies, and are strictly audited by our parent company too.
  • Our team also conducts regular external audits and strict quality tests at each production stage of our ‘Anchor Grass to Glass Process’ process.

How long can we keep Anchor Liquid Milk after opening?

  • Anchor liquid milk is a UHT processed product
  • UHT treatment is the best currently-available technology used all over the world to achieve a long shelf life milk without impacting the nutritional quality of the milk
  • During the UHT process, all the bad microorganism in milk get killed using state of the art technology.
  • Then this milk is packed into aseptic airtight packaging under strict aseptic conditions to make sure no microorganisms are entered.
  • UHT processing allows milk to be stored for four months without refrigeration prior to being opened.
  • Once consumers break the seal and open the lid, the milk inside gets exposed to the external environment and like any UHT product, once opened, it is no longer a sterile product.
  • That’s why it’s very important to store the pack under refrigeration, once opened, (less than 4oC) and should be consumed within one to two days.
  • After usage, we recommend that the lid is immediately closed and returned to the fridge, under this temperature.
  • Following the practices of closing the lid quickly, and returning the pack to the fridge will help keep the milk sterile, and give a longer life to the milk
  • Consumers can keep the product for 4-5 days without a problem in such conditions.
